**HOW TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL

GARAGE SALE OR YARD SALE

1. PICK A DATE

-Choose a date that works best for you.
-Check local newspapers and event calendars to see if other activities will be taking place in the area on the same day.
-Such as: Flea Market and Arts and Craft events.
-These types of events may help draw the type of customers you need to your garage sale.
-This is usually the type that appreciates a used item at a great price.
-Most garage sales are successful when they are held on Saturdays and/or Sundays

2. PLAN

-Decide if you want to sell with other families or groups
-Multi-family garage sales tend to attract more people but if 100% profit is what you desire then go at it alone.

3. GATHER ITEMS THAT YOU WANT TO SELL

-Try to get rid of items you don’t use much or don’t need.
-Clean out your garage and closets.
-Ask family and friends to donate items that you can sell.
-Make sure all items are clean and dust free.
Some top selling items are:

1. Name Brand and gently worn clothing
2. Furniture
3. Baby items
4. Antiques
5. Jewelry
6. Shoes
7. Unique items

4. ADVERTISE

-Post an ad in your local paper.
-Post your ad on the Wednesday or Thursday before your garage sale.
-You can also advertise in local garage sale groups on Facebook.
-Craigslist is also a site that you can use to attract attention to the sale.
-Place garage sale signs in your yard and around your neighborhood on the day of the sale.
-Make sure to include the time, date, and address on the signs.
-Also use a marker to draw arrows that will lead to your home.
-Check with your city officials to ensure you are following the proper steps to hold your sale in accordance to the city’s policy.

REMEMBER !

-Be sure to specify in your ad and on your signs if you do not accept “Early Birds”
What are “Early birds”
They are customers who are eager to see what you have for sale. They may show up thirty minutes to an hour early to get a glance at what you have for sale.

5. PRICE, CLEAN AND ORGANIZE YOUR ITEMS

-Price items at a fraction of what you originally paid for them.
-Don’t expect to get the full value of what you paid for the item. Set your prices reasonably.
Price your items at a price that you would pay if you were the customer.
-Use stickers and peel off labels to clearly display the price on each item.
-Use tables and containers to sort items.
-Try to group similar items together on each table or container.
On the day of the sale....

-Have cash on hand for change
-Use grocery store bags to place your customer’s purchases in
-Place your most attractive items in the front
-Start negotiating towards the end of your sell (to get rid of items that you do not plan to keep or donate)
-Always thanks your customers and help them with large purchases if needed
